Hamilton, Bermuda (August 9, 2016): Stephon Paynter is finding full-time work, enjoyable but tough going, with the 15-year-old IMPACT Mentoring Academy student admitting he’s typically in bed now by 7pm.
AIRCARE has partnered with IMPACT to give Stephon summer work experience and it is hoped other students will follow in the teenager’s footsteps.
Stephon has now completed his fourth week and, despite working on air conditioning and refrigeration projects, he is feeling the heat!
He was filmed at the Lobster Pot, where he had been learning about refrigeration. Before then Stephon was working at the Washington Mall, where he was given work to do by himself for the first time. All work was guided and overseen by his onsite supervisor.
“They gave me some space to work by myself. I was given a certain set of instructions and I would go off and do it.” Asked if he had done all the work correctly, Stephon said: “Of course!”
Brendan Stones, AIRCARE’s General Manager, said the HVACR industry lacks qualified Bermudians and that the partnership with IMPACT was designed to begin to address that issue and plant the seed of opportunity with its students.
He added: “AIRCARE really want to employ talented and motivated Bermudians and once they are onboard, are committed to providing ongoing professional development.
“At this time, however, there are just not enough fully qualified people in the industry, as it has been difficult to attract Bermudians into the HVACR trades.
“We are really hoping that the partnership with IMPACT is not only a long one, but also a successful one in terms of creating a sustainable career pathway for students interested in this worthwhile line of work.”
